Faces at cereneo – Meet Helena our apprentice Nurse

Helena started her apprenticeship as a nurse with us in summer 2022 and is now almost halfway through. She will give us some insights into her apprenticeship at cereneo.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship as a health professional?

I was inspired by my mother and sisters as they already worked as nurses. In the 5th/6th grade, I had the opportunity to get to know the profession of a nurse on a future day in a hospital. I really liked it. I find it very rewarding to be able to help other people and take care of them. When I did more research about the profession through online platforms to be sure about the tasks and requirements, I was completely certain that I want to become nurse.

What made you decide to start an apprenticeship at cereneo?

One of my teachers in 8th grade supported me in this process and recommended several available apprenticeships for becoming a nurse, one of which was at cereneo. As I speak 7 languages, including Portuguese, Italian and French, I found it very exciting to work in a clinic with so many different cultures. From the patients who come to our clinics from all over the world to the team, which is also very multicultural.

How was your start at cereneo?

At the beginning, I had to get used to waking up early for the morning shift and not always having weekends off. It was tiring at first, but I quickly adapted. Overall, the transition from school to workplace was a significant change for me. My supervisor has been very helpful and consistently supported and motivated me.

What do you like best about your training at cereneo?

There are many things I particularly enjoy. For example, my team! We are always there for each other, and when things get busy, you can rely on everyone, and everyone is very helpful. I also appreciate the openness of our patients. I’ve had several opportunities to hear their life stories, which I always find fascinating and touching.

What unexpected things have you learned at cereneo?

A positive surprise was the time we can spend with the patients. During my internship at a hospital, there was much less time for patient care. They had to complete tasks as quickly as possible. Due to low staffing, there was limited time for each patient. It’s very different at cereneo. We can and are encouraged to spend more time with the patients, sometimes even several hours. For instance, you can take your time assisting patients with tasks like getting dressed or washing their faces, which promotes their motivation and independence in everyday life. This is very valuable for the patients.

What motivates you in your job?

When I have to wake up at 5 am to work, what motivates me the most is the thought that I’ll learn something new today. I’m a very curious person, and as a nurse, you’re surprised with something new every day.

What do you do as a balance to your work?

Soccer! It might not sound logical, but even after a tiring day at work, I love going to soccer training. I’m generally a very active person, and soccer is my absolute passion.

Do you already know what you want to do after your apprenticeship?

Yes, I knew what I wanted to do before starting my apprenticeship as a nurse. I want to further my education and become a midwife someday. However, I’m not sure if I’ll start my studies immediately after finishing the apprenticeship. Of course, it would also be very cool to become a professional soccer player and perhaps work as a nurse or midwife on the side.
