In a recent article, we highlighted the Admission process at our Clinic and emphasized how we create an individualized Rehabilitation plan for each patient – regardless of whether they begin their Rehabilitation at our Clinic , online, or at home. We firmly believe that a highly individualized and interdisciplinary approach is crucial for successful Neurorehabilitation , taking into account key factors such as well-being, comfort, motivation, and overall progress .
However, it is crucial to understand that Progress in Neurorehabilitation is an ongoing process. To ensure that each patient's Rehabilitation plan consistently meets their changing needs, we continuously adapt it throughout their Clinic stay . In this article, we explain how we measure Progress and the methods we use to optimize and adapt each patient's Rehabilitation plan.
Upon Admission to our Clinic , patients undergo a series of assessments within the first three days. These encompass various specialties, including Neuropsychology , Speech Therapy , Movement Therapy , Nursing , and nutrition. Each assessment is based on standardized tests that have been reviewed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and validated through extensive studies. The collected data is stored in a patient information system.
However, objective data and facts are not the only factors considered in the assessment. Our team engages with patients to understand how they feel, what they expect from their Rehabilitation , and what their goals are. We answer their questions and strive to understand their needs and wishes. This holistic approach is crucial for fostering motivation and actively involving patients in their Rehabilitation process.
Once all examinations are complete, the team discusses the results with the neurologists and provides recommendations for further action. The neurology team then conducts an initial consultation with the patient, during which the results and the team's recommendations are discussed together. Following this, the patient and neurologist define the Rehabilitation goals and create an individualized plan that optimally supports the patient's needs and Recovery process.
Data collection at our Clinic is a continuous process, beginning with the Initial Assessment and extending through regular tests to the final follow-up examination. These examinations utilize the aforementioned standardized tests validated by the WHO.
In collaboration with research institutions like LLUI, we are working on data-driven Rehabilitation using sensors and cameras for diagnostic examinations. These technologies provide more objective and precise data. Further information about this collaboration can be found on the LLUI website https://www.llui.org/
Some data is also collected using robots such as the Lokomat (Link to the blog) Humac Norm (Link to the blog), Caren (Link to the blog) etc. We collect data exclusively from verified robots to ensure the reliability of the data.
The use of objective data in Rehabilitation is crucial for several reasons. It helps maintain patient motivation by clearly demonstrating the Progress achieved. Some patients may feel they are not making Progress , but this data can clarify how far they have come toward their goals. Furthermore, this data is essential for our team to track and understand the Progress of each individual patient.
The interdisciplinary case conference (IPC) takes place weekly and includes neurologists, therapists, and the Nursing team. In these conferences, we discuss the data collected for each patient from various examinations, as well as insights gained from daily interactions between our Nursing staff, therapists, neurologists, and patients.
We review the effectiveness of current therapies in relation to patients' therapy progress and determine whether adjustments are needed to improve outcomes. For example, a patient showing significant improvement should receive a more demanding Rehabilitation plan. Conversely, the Therapy Plan may need to be adjusted if a patient is not making significant Progress .
When we discuss potential changes, these may include the number of Therapy Session , their duration, the type of therapy (e.g., Movement Therapy , Neuropsychology , or Speech Therapy ), and the exercises performed in each session. We set new "sub-goals" and develop strategies to achieve them, thus staying on track with the patient's Rehabilitation goals.
By continuously adapting Rehabilitation plans to the individual needs and Progress of each patient, we ensure that they are neither underchallenged nor overchallenged. This personalized approach leads to optimal Rehabilitation outcomes and supports our patients in making steady Progress toward their Recovery goals. At our Clinic your Progress is our top priority, and we are committed to supporting you every step of the way.
